Open-source migration process
1. Task lists. The key to open-source
migration is to view all computer-related activities within the
organization as tasks rather than program-related work. Expressions
like "I use Internet Explorer" has to be replaced with "I am browsing
the Internet". For every user in the organization a task list has to be
completed. The task list has to be very specific but limited to
necesary activities.
2. Data flow Sometimes, documents are processed by more than one
person, certain resources need to be shared between several users,
other resources need to be restricted. File formats has to be replaced
with open formats if necesary.
3. Software list. In this stage software pachages are identified that
can match the task list. It is possible for one program to be replaced
with two and it is also possible that for that involved many software
products to be completed with just one program. The software list has
to be able to interface with other organization still using commercial
software. Sometimes some commercial licenses will still be necesary for
data conversion.
4. Implementation. In the implementation phase modification are made to
the selected software (if necesary), the software is installed,
manuals are written and training sessions are scheduled. Most of the
times the implementation is not simultaneous for all sectors.
